Lolita the Blue and Gold chestnut fronted macaw

The blue-and-gold macaw is an exquisite bird that is known for its stunning visual appeal. Its sociable nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels at interaction and can learn the language and tricks quickly.

Our own blue-and-gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello to water, apple and much more. The birds can live for more than 50 years in captivity.

    Lolita's Personality

Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can become bored quickly and discover ways to entertain themselves if their owners are not engaging with them enough often. If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds who enjoy playing, climbing and play. They should spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a great pet, they are also great companions for children.

Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those living near. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is determined the breeding process can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it is essential that the pet's owner is patient and understands that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process, and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

    Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. These activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates about Lolita's health and status but there are still questions. Akromas and others who have trained or overseen Lolita's health at some point are concerned about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she eats 115 pounds of salmon a day, as well as capelin, herring and squid.

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been critiqued for the quality of food that they feed to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken away from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened living in a tank that some believe is too small.

    Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, but her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and would like to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium, now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita's current condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging quickly and her health has declined.

As her captor does not need to reveal this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a part in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

d.jpgThe move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal issue.ac.jpeg
